Summer and snowballs…

Posted in Summer Fun at 7:20 pm by rioghail

Wow I can’t believe how fast the summer has come and gone. Even so it’s been pretty productive.  I managed to watch every episode of Stargate in order from season 1 through season 8 without missing any episodes of season 10 now playing on the SciFi channel. Too bad season 9 wasn’t out on DVD yet or I may have been able to fit that one in also.  I read 3 fun books, went camping, fishing and backpacking with my husband played with the dogs and even did a bit of training and trialing.  Phew!  Like my dad used to always say  - - I’m glad vacation is over so I can get some rest!

This weekend my husband and I went backpacking.  It was a nice easy 3 mile hike into a lake at about 6700 feet elevation.  While we had beautiful weather; sunny skies and temps in the 60’s there was remnants of snow on the ground from the week before.  So of course we had to have a small snowball fight.  I got the first hit in of the season but retaliation was swift.  I’m sure America’s funniest videos would have been proud.  Two grown adults lumbering around wearing full packs trying to evade one another and toss snowballs.

Tomorrow I leave for residency and the official start of my second year of graduate studies at the iSchool.  Residency is always a happy time as we get to rekindle friendships, make new acquaintances, eat Indian food, Haagen-Dazs ice cream and share our hopes and fears of class schedules and reading monstrous piles of materials while finding time to write papers and keep our jobs.

More later…

Great things about summer hiking trips…

Seeing a Great Horned Owl swoop down over your head while walking along a trail…

Dipping your hat into an ice cold stream and letting the water drip down your back…

Listening to squirrels chattering from above…

Dropping your pack at the end of the day…

Watching dragonflies practice aerial acrobatics…

Eating fresh trout for dinner instead of the freeze dried food you so carefully packed…

Listening to the buzz of mosquitoes outside your tent…

Spending time alone and seeing no other human beings for the whole weekend…

Stopping for ice cream on the drive home…

Knowing in 5 days you can do it all over again…

Friends and Fun

Posted in Summer Fun at 6:05 pm by rioghail

Since it is summer break from school I am taking advantage of some free time.  I just finished reading the first tow books of the Inheritance Trilogy (Eragon and Eldest) written by  young Montana author Christopher Paolini.  And now thanks to friend and co-worker Leslie who has been collecting the DVD’s I am watching Stargate from the beginning.  I just finished season 2 and will start season 3 next week.

In addition to borrowing lots of fun reading and viewing materials I just received a package in the mail from dogwise.com containing three training books to read. Upon opening the package I was surprised to see a familar face on the cover.book cover picture  Pictured on the cover of my new book is my friend Lora and her Beagle Buddy having fun at a practice match at Fort Missoula.  Upon looking at the credits listed on the title page I also saw that the photo was taken by anothe friend of mine Judy Strom.  She takes excellent pictures which oten end up accompanying publications.  Now I have another reason for enjoying this book even before I’ve had a chance to read it.  Hopefully the inside is as good as the outside.
